Research on ageing from the perspective of technology and health

The department HAT deals with the interaction between humans and technology. It focuses on social and technological innovations that support a healthy and independent life in old age – in one’s own living environment, in public spaces and at work. Therefore, it uses a strongly interdisciplinary research and innovation approach. The focus is on the research fields Active & Assisted Living (AAL), eHealth & Health Solutions and Participative Research & Living Lab.

Priorities for ageing research at HAT

Active & Assisted Living (AAL) stands for age-appropriate assistance systems for a healthy and independent life. This includes concepts, products and services that combine new technologies and the social environment to improve the quality of life for people in all stages of life, especially in old age.

Active and Assisted Living (AAL)

With the help of modern technical systems, the state of health is recorded and analysed to support prevention as well as therapy and rehabilitation. Classical examples of such systems are wearables, telemonitoring and telemedicine.

eHealth und Health Solutions

The Living Lab approach includes infrastructures, methods and processes in the entire R&D process. Solutions are developed together with future users, involving relevant stakeholders from politics, industry, academia and civil society.

Participative Research and Living Lab

A promising development of technology that is accepted by the future users, meets their needs and can generate positive effects in everyday life requires the participation of different scientific perspectives from technical, medical, nursing and health science, economic or social science disciplines. In the sense of integrated technology research, questions of user needs and acceptance, of ethical, legal and social aspects as well as economic issues are seen and lived in an inter- and transdisciplinary research context. Only this form of research makes it possible to realize multidimensional evaluations and proofs in close connection with theory-based technology development.

Thematic focus

INTERDISCIPLINARY TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT

Outlook

The Department focuses on the evidence-based development of new approaches and on long-term testing under real-life conditions. Derived from the goal to realize long-term and sustainable research projects on an international level, as well as the related goal of a possible long-term research in the regional area of Carinthia with a high number of cases (n>100) for the research field, strong networking with the other two IARA research fields is necessary in addition to technological research and development.
